British roads are in need of major repair and with another poor Winter predicted Richard Burnett Chief Executive of the RHA (Road Haulage Association) says Cash needed for British Roads must come now.
Richard Burnett welcomed that Philip Hammond (Chancellor of the Exchequer) recognises that the UK road network is in desperate need of a cash injection and the intention to earmark a total of 30 billion pounds for motorways and other major road improvements.
This includes £420 million for fixing potholes to be made available immediately.

“While on the one hand this is both good and welcome news, we need to see work start on improving our road network now”, said RHA chief executive Richard Burnett. “Congestion resulting from road improvements costs the haulage industry millions of pounds each year. We are already heading towards another cold winter and the potholes resulting from last winter’s freezing conditions still need to be fixed before they get even worse.”
Poor roads cause major congestion to our road network, damage to vehicles and compromise road safety.
If the roads are left in poor repair the problem could reach a level that may take years to get back to a satisfactory condition to keep the network running smoothly.
Over the last 12 months there has been an abundance of road closures, diversions and hold ups which put real pressure on the haulage industry, drivers delayed for hours in some cases which also puts pressure companies working on tight delivery schedules, service areas and lay-by parking as drivers run of driving hours to complete there journey.
On Demand deliveries have become a popular logistics option over recent years as suppliers and distribution depots streamline there operations for this to work correctly the road network needs to work efficiently or the whole system breaks down.
Poor roads effect the whole Country not only in the haulage sector but also emergency services, public transport, agriculture and social travel.
